Raneem W.

Raneem is a 10th-grade student at Sewickley Academy who plans to pursue a career in Computational biology. Ever since 4th grade, Raneem has been fascinated with the revolutionary innovation of 3D Printing. From there, Raneem developed an interest in code, starting from Scratch all the way to Java in AP Computer Science A this year. Additionally last year, Raneem worked with a team at Carnegie Mellon University to develop a Bio-Model, using Python and Blender, to replicate the P-53 gene and its response to various carcinogens. This was the moment Raneem's interest in computational biology stemmed. This year, Raneem is a part of the Launch Your Future internship at the Carnegie Science Center. In the program, she explores how the Medical, Environmental, Economic, and Technology industries play a role in Space Exploration. Along with the internship, Raneem volunteers in the Fab Lab, the technology and engineering space at the Carnegie Science Center, where she can help visitors with 3D Printing, laser cutting, coding, etc. In the future, Raneem has ambitions of publishing a children's book to encourage systemic education in the STEM field, especially for young girls. Raneem would also love to conduct research on non-communicable diseases as well as zero-knowledge proofs. Post-high school, Raneem has goals to attend Carnegie Mellon University or UPenn to apply computational biology to the field of medical research. When not exploring her technological passions, Raneem serves as Student Body Secretary at her school and participates in various extra-curricular activities such as Model UN, DECA, varsity soccer and track, the Global Studies Program, Computer Science Club, Care for Them Club, Chorus Club, and the Red Cross Club. In the summer, Raneem plans to continue to work with the Penguin Bookshop and the Education Partnership for an annual school supply drive as well as being a volunteer Camp Counselor for the summer programs at her school.
