Alana S.

Alana is a senior at Olathe Northwest High School. She participates in the school’s engineering program and plans to study electrical engineering at the University of Kansas. She is the Chief Initiatives Officer on FIRST Robotics Team 1710, and has used her platform there to promote inclusion and opportunity for every type of person who wishes to pursue STEM. Some things she has done in this purpose include pioneering a free, annual STEM workshop for middle school girls in her district, creating opportunities for her team to learn about allyship as it pertains to the LGBTQ+ community, and more. Alana has taken part in various STEM clubs and courses pertaining to programming, robotics, CAD, engineering, and more. Academically, she is a National Merit Semifinalist, Presidential Scholar Candidate, and overall well-rounded student who plans to major in Electrical Engineering at the University of Kansas, where she has been accepted as a SELF Engineering Leadership Fellow. Alana also loves thinking about all the ways people can solve problems and better the world using technology. In the future, she hopes to aid in the development of more environmentally friendly energy systems, especially renewable energy and energy-efficient processes. Beyond STEM, she enjoys singing, playing the piano and cello, volunteering, and connecting with people. She aspires to inspire other girls to get involved in engineering and technology and show them that they can do anything they put their minds to, as long as they're willing to put in the work.
