Tonya has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems from Wingate University. She has taught Business & Information Technology for 25 years. In 2012 she joined the staff at Piedmont High School in Union County, North Carolina; where she primarily teaches Computer Programming and AP Computer Science Principles. In 2014 she successfully renewed her National Board Certification and has been a grader for National Board submissions for the past 3 years. She started a Robotics club 5 years ago and her team members have been extremely successful at the county competitions. One of Tonya’s goals was to reduce the diversity gap within her Programming classes and Robotics club. She strives to encourage young women to consider Computer Science as a future career and to show all students the benefit of learning and having an understanding in technology and software development skills. Tonya is an avid hiker and has just currently started learning beekeeping and has several bee hives. She is also a passionate volunteer with Girls on the Run Union County and loves to encourage others to seek out and find an organization in their community to assist. Tonya loves to challenge her students to be better students, but more importantly to be better individuals.
