Sara is a junior at Waseca Junior & Senior High School. She is fluent in Polish, Finnish, German, and English, and learning Spanish. Coming from a European immigrant family, English is her third language. Acquiring an education is very important to Sara. She has been taking every opportunity in STEM offered by her school, and is involved in many extracurricular activities. She takes part in Science Olympiad, Programming Club, and Business Professionals of America (BPA). Sara joined Programming Club in seventh grade, and is currently the only girl in the club. Also in seventh grade, she was allowed to join the High School Science Olympiad and High School Math Team. Sara taught herself to program in Python, ROBOTC, HTML, and CSS with the help of Khan Academy, Codecademy, and YouTube. By her freshman year, she was on the varsity team in both Science Olympiad and Math Team, was a group leader in Programming Club, and the main programmer in her Robotics Team sub-team. Since her sophomore year, Sara became the high school Programming Club leader, and in her junior year, she has founded two programming clubs at Sacred Heart School and Waseca Intermediate School, and is teaching both. Sara has medaled in multiple Science Olympiad events. She also placed at BPA Regionals competition in Fundamentals of Web Design and was a State Finalist, moving on to Nationals. Sara’s greatest accomplishment was medaling three years in a row at the SDSU Programming Design Competition, with her team receiving a first and two second place award. In her free time, Sara enjoys playing clarinet, taking dance classes, drawing, making animations, and taking online college science courses. She is planning to attend college and major in biochemistry, and she hopes to one day work as a scientist in the field of medical research.
