Monica is a senior at Amos Alonzo Stagg High School in Palos Hills, Illinois. Monica wrote her first lines of code using Code Academy the summer before her freshman year. Since then, she has gotten the opportunity to attend the 2017 Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program at JP Morgan Chase Chicago where she became interested in not only learning computer science, but being an advocate for change. After realizing the lack of “STEM opportunities” present in her community and school, she decided to stir some things up by establishing both the Girls Who Code club and Science National Honor Society Chapter at her school. She is passionate about closing the gender gap in STEM and participates in organizations such as Technovation, GirlCon, Girls Who Code, and Kode with Klossy. In addition, she serve as the voice for students in her district by being apart of her district’s Superintendent Advisory Board.
