Gretchen is a current student at Centerville High School and is very excited to pursue a career in computer science. Her ultimate goal is to receive a master’s degree in computer science. As a step towards her goal, she was one of only about 20 students selected for her school’s Information Technology block class program. Through this program, she earned her PC Pro certification and Cisco Certified Technician certification and she also gained experience in programming in VB, C++, and C#; web developing using HTML, Css, JavaScript, and PHP; maintenance; and soft skills. Her new skills thoroughly prepared her for her internship at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base through the Wright Scholar Research Assistant Program. The Wright Scholar program has very competitive selection, with about 40 people getting accepted each summer, and is designed to introduce students to scientific career path while also learning about other careers the Base has to offer. This incredible opportunity allowed her to not only work in an environment where she could explore her options in the computer science realm, but also learn about work environments on the Base. Gretchen’s most memorable experiences specifically in her lab include contributing design ideas to their autonomous vehicle simulation software, learning how to program using the languages they use, working in the network room, testing out different simulation games, and discovering what real-world computer scientists do every day. Gretchen loved the technical experience she gained, and also the chance to meet new people and learn how to work with them. After experiencing life at Wright-Patterson, she hopes to work for an Air Force Base in her future. Apart from starting her career, she has been a stage manager, costumer, and prop master throughout her high school career. She also likes to make art, learn how to speak Spanish, and spend time with her friends when she gets the chance. Gretchen hopes that her future career can combine her love for technology and teamwork.
