My name is Ashanti Benons and I am currently a high school senior. In tenth grade, I became an AP Scholar with Distinction for scores on AP Chemistry, Seminar, Calc BC and Computer Science A. I undertook this rigorous course load in order to gain acceptance into the Smart Scholars Program during my junior year of high school. This dual enrollment program at Medgar Evers College will enable me to finish an associates degree in Biology when I graduate. Starting spring of tenth grade, I took part in New York on Tech's Tech360 program, an introductory course into the fundamentals of web development. The following year, I was accepted into the company’s nine month computer science fellowship program, Tech Flex Leaders and gained valuable networking skills and knowledge of coding languages such as JSON and Javascript. I received 2nd place out of 16 teams(80 people) in a December 2018 competition focusing on website development. During the summer after my sophomore year, I started planning out the creation of a robotics team at my school to promote student interest in mechanical engineering. In October, after reaching out to parents, faculty and the principal, the team got started. As co-president, I recruit and teach new members, keep records, design and build our competition robot. My team received the Connect Award and 7th place out of 22 teams at a Dec. Qualifier; We were 1 of 23 teams out of 95 to move on to NYC Championships. To conclude our season we received the 2nd Place Connect Award. During my junior year, I became inducted into my school's NHS chapter and ran for Co-Chair of Leadership. As this role, I managed a Peer-Mentorship program currently engaging over 100 students. I am a speaker at monthly cabinet, general meetings and school events. To learn more about how to serve my school, I am a Librarian of Tomorrow Intern. I began my service at a local library near me in January of my junior year and assisted with STEM workshops, art classes and helped out their FLL Robotics team. Lastly, Drawing and storytelling are two hobbies I have treasured since I was a young child. I have always admired art for its beauty and ability to convey stories in ways that words can't. After taking a studio art class during tenth grade, my teacher Ms.Aytche recommended me for AP Studio Art my junior year. This year, I am taking AP Art Drawing and enrolled in the Cooper Union Saturday Art Program. The highest degree that I would like to aspire for is a doctoral degree. I am excited about careers in the engineering, healthcare and education fields. Biomedical, software and mechanical engineering spark my interest because I believe that there are so many different ways that knowledge can be applied to creating technology devices that can improve the lives of people. In the healthcare field, I am most interested in pediatrics, because I believe childhood is when our view of the world is shaped the most. The education field interests me because I want to serve as a role model for kids and adults, shaping their view of the world and leading them into rewarding career paths.
