Currently, Shami is President of her school's chapter of National Honor Society, is an AP Scholar with Distinction, and is heavily involved in a Service Awareness and Integration Club as well as Science Olympiad. Since her first semester of taking college classes at Guilford College, she has been on the Academic Dean's List. From the minute she began high school Shami hit the ground running, taking an accelerated path in AP and Honors-level courses. She took AP Calculus AB/BC in her sophomore year and upon entering the college level enrolled in courses like Multivariable Calculus and Computer Technology and Information Systems to expand her understanding of math and applying them to computer and phone applications. This upcoming semester she is taking Mathematical Physics to delve into STEM more. In addition to math courses, Shami has taken AP Environmental Science, Honors Biology, Honors Anatomy and Physiology, College-level Physics, and is currently taking College-level Chemistry. Being passionate about understanding others, she also has enrolled in various psychology courses and is taking classes to become fluent in Spanish. Her team has consistently been recognized for their design, programming, marketing, and outreach efforts at the State, National, and World competition levels. Through this club and her teammates, she has learned more about programming and the engineering process, which made her love STEM even more. This summer she was accepted into MIT's Online Science, Technology, and Engineering Community (MOSTEC) research program and attended North Carolina's Governor's School, which is a six-week residential program for students to delve into subjects of their interest. There she studied Natural Science, an experience she calls “life-changing” due to both the courses and the amazing people she met. STEM and courses aren't Shami's only interests. She is an avid basketball player, lover-of-sports, and also enjoys playing the piano and dancing. Shami has loved exploring the sciences, technology, and engineering during her schooling, so she aspires to major in biomedical engineering to be a pioneer in biomedical research.
