I grew up around technology, always helping my dad build computers from scratch. I absolutely loved everything about computers as a child and grew up with a respect for and an understanding of technology. I received my bachelor's degree in Mathematics and with that, took my first computer science course. Though, I didn't love my first course, I grew to love it the third time around. I have since become a Computer Science Master teacher for Project Lead The Way and have will be awarded a Master's degree in computer science in December 2017. I feel very accomplished, however, I know I have just touched the surface of this field and there is so much I want to expose my students to. I know many will say this about their goal, but since I was a child, my goal has always been to make a difference in the world. Many people have told me otherwise, but I have always believed that one person can make a difference and I think computing is the best way to do that. Because of my missed opportunities, I strive to provide as many opportunities for my students, especially for my girls. I am regularly seeking opportunities for them to excel outside of their comfort zone. I have been in committees and conferences surrounded by men and have come to realized that I am part of a minority. This is something I had never felt since I have been welcomed so openly into the computing community. I want my students, especially my young women, to feel empowered in these situations.
