During 7th grade, Abby Sofía competed in Duchesne's first TCEA Mindstorms Robotics Challenge team in 2013 coming in 17th place. I have been on the Speech Team for Duchesne from 2011-2014. I speak 3 languages, I know English, Spanish (fluently), French(conversational), and Mandarin(a little bit). In 8th grade, Abby Sofia was a lead team member of the class of 2018 spending last year designing an experiment headed to the ISS (International Space Station) as part of a pilot program with the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), creating experiments that all elements had to fit into a 10.3 centimeter anodized aluminum container. Her project is set to launch any day on the Antares rocket from Launch Pad OA at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) at NASA Wallops Island Flight Facility on Virginia's shore. Also last year she elected to take Computer Programming as a prerequisite to entry into the Upper School Information Technology internship at Duchesne. She is the only Freshman qualified to take this course this year. Also in 8th grade she was the President of the Tech Club at Duchesne. I moved to Hong Kong for my Sophomore year and started a competitive robotics team for VEX at Hong Kong International School. In my Junior year I organized the VEX Robotics tournament that my school was hosting. Along with organizing the tournament logistics, I was Emcee and won the Volunteer of the Year Award for all the work I put into organizing our first tournament. I also worked with the middle schoolers to help them think out of the box to solve different problems using Lego EV3s. In addition, I also competed in ROV MATE competitions my Junior year. I then moved back to Houston for my Senior year and continued FRC and working in the tech departmen at my school. Dating back to 7th grade, I have wanted to one day graduate from MIT in mechanical and/or electrical engineering.
