Karen is a high school senior at Dreyfoos School of the Arts, where she double majors in piano and vocal studies. Despite her affinity for the arts, Karen was always looking for more. During her Freshman year, she took her first class in computer science. From that moment on, she was hooked. Karen nurtured her passion by completing two different internship programs at the Max Planck Institute of Neuroscience and the University of Florida. At these institutions, Karen worked on programs designed to correlate electron and confocal microscopy for better tissue analysis and to build three-dimensional reconstructions of the human vascular system from CT scans for earlier identification of latent radiation-induced lung damage. In the future, Karen hopes to continue studying computer science at college with the end goal of becoming a software designer at a research institution. Karen wants to study the incorporation of computer science into biology and other "wet-lab" sciences, facilitating research by providing the best imaging and analysis techniques for their experiments.
