Yarency, 17 from Oakland, California, is currently a senior at Lionel Wilson College Preparatory Academy. She aspires to work in the field of technology and has been interested ever since she joined AimHigh, a summer program in 2013, and was introduced to the basics of programming using Scratch, an online programming community. Yarency has been a part of SMASH Stanford, CURIE Academy Cornell, i-Stem Scholars, and is currently a part of the Google CodeNext program in her city. In the future, she hopes to attend a four-year university and major in computer science, where she can prepare for her career in the tech industry. Outside of STEM, Yarency actively engaged with her community through the Oakland Youth Advisory Commission, serving as a youth representative of her district. She also volunteers at her local senior center where she works with the Oakland Human Services Department to distribute food to people and seniors in her community at East Oakland.
