Akshaya is a junior at The Harker School. She grew passionate about Computer Science as a rising freshman, when she took an Advanced Programming in Java course, and during her freshman year, when she took AP Computer Science with Data Structures. In the summer of 2016, Akshaya had the opportunity to work on an Internet of Things project called Healthy IoT as part of the UCSC Science Internship Program. The goal of the project was to apply IoT to the field of healthcare, specifically to determine the causes of bedsores in patients lying in hospital beds and help prevent these bedsores by monitoring patients’ conditions in hospital beds using a network of sensors. Additionally, Akshaya enjoys participating in competitive VEX Robotics. She was one of lead programmers and also served as one of the drivers for the VEX Robotics Team 6089, which won many awards and qualified for multiple CA State Championships. Now, she serves as co-captain for her VEX Robotics Team 315A. This year, Team 315A has been Tournament Champions twice, was a Tournament Finalist at the CA State Championship in February 2017, and has qualified for the VEX Robotics World Championship that will be held in April 2017. Akshaya also strongly believes in giving back to the community through volunteering. She is the Director of Java Programming for MathAndCoding, a non-profit organization started and run by high school students from across the Bay Area. She has taught numerous coding workshops since her freshman year in public libraries as well as for underprivileged children at community centers. Through this organization, she has had the opportunity to teach kids of all ages that come from many different backgrounds, and she hopes to inspire them to pursue their interests in computing and technology from a very early age. Akshaya also runs cross-country for her school's Varsity team, loves to play basketball, and enjoys playing the piano.
