Gloria is a senior at Mount Desert Island High School in Bar Harbor, Maine. She is currently participating a VEX Robotics team of her school, which was a semifinalist at the 2017 Maine state championships and will be competing at the state competition on March 3rd, 2018. Prior to this, she had participated in VEX Robotics as a sophomore as well as in LEGO Robotics in middle school. As a sophomore, she was a member of the first Exploring Computer Science session at MDIHS. Her senior year she took Harvard's AP CS50 computer science principals, focusing on programming. Within her school community she takes a leading role as a member of the National Honors Society, National Honors Music Society, as well as a member of the Gay Straight Diversity Alliance. She hopes to go to college to major in Marine Biology and minor in Computer Science in the fall after her senior year. Gloria originally began considering Marine Biology after spending two summers volunteering at the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratories under instruction of Dr. Jane Disney. She hopes that in studying Marine Biology and computer science she can help to improve the research methods surrounding marine life such as whales. She also believes that we should spend more efforts to get to know our ocean, because there is still more to learn about our oceans in the vast portions of the ocean that have not been explored yet.
