NCWIT, Bloomberg & FIRST Roll Out the Red Carpet for Young Women in Tech in NYC

Author(s):

On March 7th, NCWIT hosted a Young Women in Technology Social at the NYC FIRST Robotics competition in partnership with Bloomberg. Around 150 young women and their coaches, parents, and mentors gathered to connect with each other, network with developers and industry leaders, and learn about Aspirations in Computing Program – and enjoy some delicious cupcakes.

The event kicked off with a get-to-know-you scavenger hunt, followed by inspiring words from NCWIT’s Ruthe Farmer, Bloomberg’s Michelle Nabavian and Jackie Pan, an Aspirations alum who is interning at Bloomberg, who shared her experiences and encouraged all the young women in the room to network, work hard and consider an internship with Bloomberg in the future! Door prizes included an iPad for one lucky winner, as well as 10 pairs of robot knee socks. See all the smiling faces of the young women at the event here.

After the social, a group of Aspirations alumni headed to Bloomberg HQ in a VIP bus. They enjoyed a special tour of the cutting-edge facilities and had dinner with Bloomberg developers. The young women were able to really spend time and ask questions about how the Bloomberg employees got where they are, what to study in college, and how to secure an internship. Needless to say, more than a few of the young women left with the contact information of the technical staff at Bloomberg and their eyes on the prize.

This event kicked off the new NCWIT Aspirations Community initiative sponsored by Bloomberg to help keep young women engaged in computing, connected with each other, and dialed into internships, scholarships and career opportunities through the NCWIT network. Other community events planned for this year include bringing Aspirations Ambassadors to the NCWIT Summit, an Aspirations Alumni Reunion at Grace Hopper 2013, meet-ups around the country, and webinars on internships and careers.

We want to give a special shout-out to Bloomberg for sponsoring this important community work and to NYC FIRST for hosting the hosting our kickoff event!
