AspireIT 2.0

- NCWIT AspireIT Reconfigures to Meet Growing Demands for Computing Learning Experiences

NCWIT AspireIT (, a program designed to teach K-12 girls programming fundamentals and computational thinking, will pivot to a new, two-pronged approach in April 2021 that includes the AspireIT Toolkit and the AspireIT Impact Award. This approach replaces a former application and funding model while utilizing and leveraging lessons learned to date.

  • The AspireIT Impact Award, launching April 2021, elevates the core values and spirit of NCWIT AspireIT, recognizing Aspirations in Computing Community members for their incredible efforts to build and creatively offer near-peer, hands-on computing opportunities while ultimately encouraging K-12 girls to contribute their unique perspectives and ideas to future innovations.
  • The AspireIT Toolkit, launching Fall 2021, provides formal and informal educators with guidance on how to create and deliver more effective hands-on learning experiences in computing that incorporates near-peer mentorship.

The landscape of technical opportunities for youth is ever changing: teaching computer science both formally in schools and informally outside of school has become more prevalent in the face of a pandemic that has led to more online opportunities for learning. Since its 2013 inception, nearly 13,000 girls have received nearly 380,000 instruction hours through more than 600 NCWIT AspireIT programs in 43 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico — many of whom did not have prior computing experience. Today, AspireIT adapts to further its impact on increasing the meaningful and influential participation of girls and women in the field of computing.
